Bessie Mae Stephens passed away peacefully on January 1, 2017, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Bess was born on October 13, 1937, in Wanette, Oklahoma, and grew up in Shawnee, Oklahoma, where her responsibilities as a wife and mother came early at 18. Despite her health challenges, Bess enjoyed her later years surrounded by the love of her family, good care by the staff at Brookdale Spring Shadows and the comfort of God. Bess had a keen sense of humor, a natural beauty, and loved her Houston Texans.
Bess is survived by 4 children; Renee Stephens, Steve and wife Anne-Laure Stephens, Stephanie and husband Michael Zellner, and Amy Stehr Rozzell; grandchildren Jessica and husband Howard Elliot, Stewart Stephens, Hunter Stephens, Sarah Stephens, and step grandson Thibault Dacy; and great granddaughter Adalyn. She is also survived by her sister June Garver, her brother Jim and wife Debbie Hudson, and many other nieces and nephews.
Bess is preceded in death by her mother Bessie Pearl Bowers and father William Columbus Hudson; husband and former husband Don Stephens and Aaron Stehr; and several half brothers and sisters.
A private family cemetery service will occur at the Tecumseh cemetery, close to her mother and other family members in Tecumseh, Oklahoma. Heartfelt thanks go to loving caregivers led by Merlina at Brookdale and family and friends for their thoughts and prayers. Although no local service will be held, a message the family would share is to cherish the memories of your parents like we will for our mother and to love them, as Johnny Mathis sang, until 'The Twelfth of Never'.
In lieu of flowers and other remembrances, donations can be made to the Resurrection House, a place of second chances founded and operated by Bess' nephew Kent Hibbard, P.O. Box 72, Chickasha, OK 73023-0072.www.thereshouse.com
