Born in Peabody, he was the son of the late Peter and Angelina (Perrotis) Chronis. He was a lifelong resident of Peabody and a graduate of Peabody High School, class of 1956. After high school, James enlisted with the United States Army and served from 1957 to 1958 and served in 1961 before he was honorably discharged.
James was employed for the City of Peabody Electric Light Department for over 25 years and retired as a foreman. In 1979 he started his own landscaping company, James P Chronis & Sons and worked in the field until 1991 and then retired in 2009 after spending 18 years as office manager.
James was a member of the Jordan Lodge Masons in Peabody and the Aleppo Shriners Club of Wilmington where he was a member of the Motor Patrol. He also was a member of the St. Vasilios Men Club and enjoyed gardening and golfing.
Survived by his wife; his son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Lin Chronis of Danvers, his daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Timothy Smith of New Milford, CT, his brother, George Chronis of Peabody and his sister Anna Nekolopoulos of Peabody, his five grandchildren, Olivia, Emily, and Leah Smith and Andrew and Jack Chronis.
Also predeceased by his brother, Ernie Chronis.
Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
