A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Oconto Falls, on Wednesday, May 16. Inurnment will be in the cemetery in Oconto Falls at a later date. Visitation will be from 9:30 until the time of the services.
Chet was born on Dec. 15, 1914, in Oconto Falls, the son of John and Christine (Van Lishout) VanHaren.
Chet married the former Gladys Thompson in 1938 and they lived most of their lives on the VanHaren family farm outside of Oconto Falls. He lived in Oconto Falls until 1998 when he and Gladys moved to Port Charlotte, Fla. He moved back to Oconto Falls in 2006 after Gladys's death.
In addition to working the farm, Chet also worked for several years at Scott Paper Co., and later, after he gave up farming, he worked as a custodian at Oconto Falls High School for 12 years. He retired from there in 1979. Chet loved his wife, his family, his farm, the outdoors, and people.
Chet will be greatly missed by his daughter, Joyce VanHaren, Port Charlotte, Fla.; his son, Roger (Marilyn) VanHaren, Beaver Dam; five grandchildren and their spouses; seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends; three sisters-in-law, Vietta Payette, DePere, Beverly Mount, Marshfield, and Adeline VanHaren, Manitowoc.
He was preceded in death by his dear wife Gladys in 2006, and by all of his brothers and sisters, Ed, Ben, Mary Borst, Louise Dickman {2/3/1909-7/16/1988}, Bob, Larry, Edith Mecha-Gilbert {3/2/1911-9/5/2004}, Dorothy Curran {6/13/1913-3/14/1996} , Irene Konitzer, and Clarence {4/4/1920-8/16/1994}.
