Justin J. Barnes, Hokes Bluff, died Saturday in Athens, Ga. following a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Hokes Bluff First Baptist Church with burial in Hokes Bluff cemetery.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lillian Roper Barnes; son, Jerry Barnes, Scottsboro; daughters, Mrs. Sue Clayton and Mrs. Mary Ellen Marbut, both of Hokes Bluff; sister, Mrs. Dee Rutledge, Hokes Bluff; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lamerle Barnes, Scottsboro; sons-in-law, Jimmy Marbut and Massey Clayton, Jr., Hokes Bluff; grandchildren, Mrs. Carol Lindsey and Margaret Barnes, both of Huntsville, David Barnes, Boulder, Colo., Jeff Clayton, Birmingham, Steve, Scott and Robin Clayton, Mark, Neil and Beth Marbut, all of Hokes Bluff, Pam and Phillip Head and Mrs. Patsy Lavender, all of Huntsville; great grandchild, Amie McCoy.

Mr. Barnes was a native and lifelong resident of Etowah County and was the son of the late Riley Barnes and Liney Gidley Barnes. He was a member of the Hokes Bluff First Baptist church, a deacon and teacher of the Men's Bible class for many years. He was a member of the Hokes Bluff Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge (I.O.O.F.), past Grand Master of Alabama and representative from Alabama to the Sovereign Grand Lodge. Mr. Barnes was the first City Clerk of Hokes Bluff and instrumental in the organization of the Hokes Bluff Cemetery Association and served as president for many years. He was a member of First and Casualty Board of Gadsden. Mr. Barnes was a teacher and principal in the Etowah County school system for a number of years and was owner and operator of J.J. Barnes and Company Insurance.
