Maurice Lee Alcorn Jr., 90, passed away on Friday, Dece. 30, 2016. Mr. Alcorn was born in Columbia, S.C., in 1926.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Epworth Cemetery in Vanceboro with military honors.

He graduated from Columbia High School at age 16 and joined the United States Marine Corps in 1944. His unit was VMD354 Photographic Squadron in Marine Aircraft Group 21, which was based in Greenville, where he met his future bride at the USO Club in Greenville. His unit was transferred to Guam in the Pacific Theatre and stationed there from 1945 to 1946.

Mr. Alcorn attended East Carolina's Teacher College and was a graduate of the University of South Carolina with an engineering degree. He worked for R.J. Reynolds and later at Dupont, where he retired.

He was an avid golfer and an original member of Brook Valley Country Club. A newspaper article dated Nov. 13, 1996, stated "Brook Valley - Lee Alcorn, 70, carded a 69 last week. His round included a 31 on the front side where he birdied holes 7, 8, and 9." Lee also enjoyed bowling, tennis and softball and was a member of the Pirate Club.

Mr. Alcorn was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Bland Alcorn; and daughter, Barbara Alcorn Harris.

He is survived by his son, Maurice Lee Alcorn III; grandsons, Noah Kenan Alcorn, Morgan Ross Alcorn, Breeze Luddek Alcorn, and Jesse Lee Harris; great granddaughter, Brianna Lee Alcorn; sisters, Carolyn Alcorn Clark and husband, Tom; and Mary Alcorn Taylor.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Flowers are welcome or memorials can be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave. 7th Floor., New York, NY 10001 or Prostate Cancer Foundation, 1250 Fourth St., Santa Monica, CA 90401.
