John Wade Ward, 97, of Havre de Grace, MD, passed away on October 3, 2013.
He was born in Ashe County, North Carolina, to the late Stephen and Della Moxley Ward. He was the husband of the late Gwendolyn Mae Richardson Ward and the loving father of Mary Jo Smith of Frankford, DE, Karen Ward Bird and her husband, Victor, of Drumore, PA, and former daughter-in-law Evelyn Boyd of Havre de Grace. He was preceded in death by two sons, Stanley Wade Ward and John Roy Ward. Mr. Ward was the grandfather of Sally Leonetti, Melody Hall, Sandra Graybeal, Carole Hawkins, Nelson Ward, and Kristen Ward. He had 18 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren. He was the dear brother of Blandina Yale, Edna Nuckolls, and the late Bruce Ward, Phama Meyer, Dale Ward, Kyle Ward, and Blain Ward.
Prior to retirement from the Maryland State Highway Administration, Mr. Ward was employed by Golden Vein Farms and Mount Pleasant Orchards. He was ordained a deacon at Trappe Missionary Baptist Church on July 29, 1967 and later served as a deacon and trustee at Carsins Run Baptist Church for many years. As a devout Christian and devoted family man, he truly lived by the Golden Rule. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a well respected and admired uncle, neighbor and friend and will be sorely missed by many.
A viewing will be held on Monday, October 7, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM, at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 South Washington Street, Havre de Grace, MD 21078. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 11:00 AM. Pastor James Wright will officiate. Interment will be at Harford Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, MD. Serving as pallbearers are James Mays, Darryl Leonetti, James Dudding, David Walker, Charles Ayers, and Dennis Price.
