Ruth Childs Hawkins, 92, of Gray died Thursday, October 27, 2005. Services were held Sunday, October 30 at Gray United Methodist Church with burial at Highview Cemetery in Gray. Rev. John Haney officiated.

Mrs. Hawkins was born in Wayside May 17, 1913, and was the daughter of the late Dauphin Vesro Childs and Florence Greene Childs. A lifelong resident of Gray, she was a 1930 graduate of Jones County High School and a 1934 graduate of Wesleyan College, earning her degree in education. Mrs. Hawkins taught school in Wilkinson County and served as a visiting teacher for Jones County Schools for thirty years. She was a member of Gray United Methodist Church and the Oliver Morton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was preceded in death by her husband, Holmes Johnson Hawkins, Sr., long time sheriff of Jones County.

Mrs. Hawkins is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Holmes J., Jr. and Patsy Hawkins of Lilburn; grandchildren, Hope Hawkins of Lawrenceville and Holmes J. Hawkins, III and wife Tracey of Alpharetta; great-grandchildren, Palmer King, Bailey Hawkins and Bryson Hawkins, all of Alpharetta; brother and sister-in-law, Floyd and Betty Jean Childs of Gray; sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Francis Golson of Gray; sisters-in-law, Patsy Childs, Elaine Childs and Margarite Childs, all of Gray, Vivian Bridges of Macon and Mobley Ross and husband, Ben Ross of Lincolnton; brother-in-law, John Hawkins and wife, Rosalyn Hawkins of Lincolnton; and by many nieces and nephews.
