Janet L. Hudnut, Church's Musician

Janet L. Hudnut, 61, an organist, composer and former choir director at the Winnetka Presbyterian Church, 1255 Willow Rd., Winnetka, was the wife of the church's pastor, Rev. Robert K. Hudnut.

A Winnetka resident, she died Sunday at home.

Her husband called her "exuberant, joyous, happy, creative and inspiring."

"Music," he said, "meant everything to her."

Mrs. Hudnut, who was born in Des Moines, attended public school there and was a self-taught pianist, later studying music at Drake University. At age 15 she had a radio show on which she played the piano.

She composed numerous cantatas, anthems and musicals. Among the latter was music as well as choreography to accompany the children's story, "The Velveteen Rabbit." It has been performed in churches throughout the Midwest.

She and her husband lived in Minneapolis until he was selected to be pastor in Winnetka in 1975.

Mrs. Hudnut was organist and choir director at the church from 1977 to 1992.

Survivors, besides her husband, include two daughters, Heidi Hudnut-Beumler and Heather Page; four sons, Kirk Bell, Scott Bell, Robert and Matthew; a brother; and four grandchildren.

Services for Mrs. Hudnut were held Thursday.

An obituary was published in The Chicago Tribune on April 16, 1993
