Howard Augustus Cravath was born in San Diego, October 30, 1878. He attended elementary and high schools in that community, and then studied pharmacy in San Francisco, with private coaching for two years under his employer. He then took, and passed, the State Board of Pharmacy examinations and moved to Bakersfield in 1902, when he went to work at the Hughes Drug Store, then at Nineteenth and Chester, where Archa Vest's store is now located. The store had been established in 1896 by Mr. Hughes, who later was to become a Rotarian. Howard's service with the store was given special recognition in 1905 when Mr. Hughes incorporated the firm and gave the personnel an interest in it. Mr. Hughes died in 1934. In 1936 the store burned to the ground, but Mr. Richard Apsley and Howard Cravath started the store at Eighteenth and Eye Streets, which existed for nearly eighteen years, when it went out of business January 1, 1954. The name of Hughes Drug Store was maintained at the new location.

In 1908 Howard and Miss Elena Thurston were married. They had met in Bakersfield. Their daughter, Mrs. Madeleine Chaffey, lives in Santa Barbara. One of Howard's most recently prized possessions is the citation extended to him by the State Board of Pharmacy, recognizing him as the oldest practicing pharmacist in California, a singularly fine recognition for loyalty to his profession.

Howard Cravath became a member of the Rotary Club of Bakersfield in April of 1921, slightly less than a year after the club was chartered. Since coming to Bakersfield in 1902 his life has been closely related to the progress of the community. Howard served as President of the Club in 1927-28. He has also held membership in the Elks Club for 46 years, having become a member in 1908, and served as the Exalted Ruler in 1921. He was a delegate the Grand Lodge of Elks at the convention in Georgia in 1927, and traveled also to New York, Boston and Niagara Falls. He has qualified for membership through successive stages of classification changes, these being Drugs-Retail; Senior Active, and Honorary. During the first seventeen years of his membership in Rotary, Howard had a perfect attendance record Rotarian.

Howard's recreation was chiefly through golf, which he played first at the old Kern River Golf Club, and later at the Stockdale Golf and Country Club. J. A. Hughes, Everett King, and other Rotarians, were his golfing companions, and he often played golf with his wife, who passed away in 1941. His lovely home at 2221 Cedar Street was built by Mr. Hughes, but occupied by Mr. Cravath and his family since 1927. Howard has just received an acknowledgment from the California State Board of Pharmacy, recognizing his 51 years of membership in the Association.
