1LT Alphonzo Linwoodel Chavis, Vietnam Veteran, Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, he became a Native of Sanford, NC and Enlisted in Charlotte, NC.

First Lieutenant Alphonzo Linwoodel Chavis was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Reserve, 1LT Chavis served our country until May 27th, 1969 in Quang Duc, South Vietnam. He was 24 years old and was not married. It was reported that Alphonzo died from multiple fragmentation wounds from a mine. His body was recovered. 1LT Chavis is on panel 24W, line 115 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for one year.

I was with him on May 27,1969: I think of him ever so often. I will never forget him. I was with Lt Chavis on May 27,1969. We were in the same platoon and both from North Carolina. Our platoon flew out of Song-Be Fire Support Base and landed in a Hot Landing Zone. We were to close to the enemy that Artillery could not help us. Gun Ships and the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment finally got to where we were pinned down in elephant grass, and made a sweep. We crawled back to the wood line. The next day we went back to the same LZ. We found bunkers with a small amount of NVA web gear. That is the way it happened. I think of him often and always say a prayer for him and all my Vietnam Brothers. I have been back to Song-Be. They have a golf resort rather than a fire support base. We flew on choppers to an hot LZ approximately 10 clicks from Song Be fire support base camp. That was the longest day of my life. NVA were in bunkers waiting on us to land. There was a lot of death and pain that day. May God Cradle You and all the other KIAs in his EVER LOVING ARMS. Cary Dawkins, 196 Selah Drive, Rockingham, NC, [email protected].

He was the Son of Mr and Mrs Luther L Chavis, RFD #4, Box 374, Sanford, NC.

He served with Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, "Big Red One", USARV

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Silver Star Medal, The Bronze Star Medal, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal, The Good Conduct Medal and The Army Commendation Medal.
