Marcia was born to her parents Arnold Laverne Emery & Arlene Fraiser Emery on August 27th, 1945 in Denver, Colorado, and raised by the late and beautiful Doris Greenwood Emery. She graduated from Colorado State University in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts / Dual-Major in English and French. On June 17, 1967, Marcia and Eugene W. Frey celebrated their marriage in Ft. Collins, CO (49 years). She finished her education with a Master’s Degree in English, teaching and counseling as a reading specialist for the learning impaired with a concentration in special needs.
At the beginning of Marcia’s professional career she served the Executive Secretary for Brothers International in Denver, then moved to Teach English while serving as a reading specialist in Chicago, Dist. 214, Grades 712. Later, in York, PA, Marcia worked at the Christian School of York. Her favorite jobs, however, outlasted all others as a devoted Christian, Wife, and Mother.
Life was never boring around Marcia. She teased endlessly. She enjoyed numerous crafts. She tailored materials and poems into one-of-a-kind, personal greeting cards. She was an excellent seamstress and a wonderful chef. Her children learned at an early age that she was an excellent roller-skater, as we went on numerous journeys around various neighborhoods (she would skate while pushing us in our strollers). Later we would learn that she was also an accomplished ice skater (turns out her mother was a professional, too). She loved to knit, sew, plan elaborate parties, craft, scrapbook, and keep the neighborhood kids busy and guessing. Marcia was committed to various ladies’ social groups, and was an active member of the York Outdoor Country Club for 24 years, where she formed many of her best and longest lasting friendships. She was a member of the ladies 9 hole, 18 hole, and Golden Girls Teams. She also enjoyed, but never dominated, the Bridge Club. Her hobbies were not limited to golf and cards; Marcia was extremely active with all of her grandchildren and still found time to be part of her Church and Bible Study groups. She was especially proud to help people in need by sharing and participating with non-profit organizations such as the Red Cross, United Way, and the American Heart Association.
In May of 2014 Marcia was diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease. In concert with Marcia's positive personality, she tackled the disease head on. She accepted her diagnosis, courageously rose to the challenge to help defeat it. She willingly participated in several clinical and medicinal trials at Penn State Hershey Medical Center and John's Hopkins University Hospital. We hope that the outcome of this research will benefit the vast number of patients with ALS in the years to come.
In addition to her husband, Eugene, she is survived by her three children, Bryan Frey and his wife Megan, Laura Rogove and her husband Jordan, and Sean Frey; four beloved grandchildren, Alexia Diane, Kadin Eugene, Julian Tre and Jada Sky; sister-in-law Wanda Kurka; two brothers, John Emery and Clyde Greenwood, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, December 22nd at 10:00 a.m., Messiah United Methodist Church,1300 N. Beaver Street, York, PA 17404, followed by a memorial service officiated by Pastor Robert Vizthum and Reverend Dr. Philip Kissinger at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at the church.
