Evelyn Anderson, 96, Hill City S.D., formerly of Sioux Falls, died Monday, December 12, 2016 in Hill City.

Evelyn Gladys Solem was born to Bernt and Bertha Solem on October 16, 1920 in Rhame, S.D.

She received her teaching certification in 1945, from South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D., and subsequently taught for 4 years in the Madison-Orland school system. During this same time, Milton C. Anderson had returned from the war and was beginning his studies at Brookings. One day, while he was visiting Evelyn's principal, the two future "globetrotters" met.

They were married on June 22, 1947, and a daughter, Juanita, was born one year later. Until Juanita was 9 years old, Evelyn and Milton taught in several communities in South and North Dakota; Evelyn taught home economics, art, English, and chemistry.

While Milton was teaching farming practices to U.S. military veterans, he was accepted by the Department of Defense to teach military dependents in Mannheim, (West) Germany. Evelyn prepared GIs for GED tests. They ended up teaching in Germany, Ethiopia, Holland, Turkey, and the Azores for 22 years.

In 1979, Evelyn and Milton returned to the U.S. and lived in Hills, MN until they joined the Peace Corps and moved to Sierra Leone. Evelyn started a home economics department, and the couple supported 20 schoolgirls with educational funding.

After their return to the U. S., they eventually settled at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls in 1997, where Milton lived until his death in 2006. Noted for her quilting skills, Evelyn joined a circle and enjoyed socializing. She possessed that rare ability to get along with everyone, likely because she accepted people for who they were. During her last years, Evelyn left everyone she met with her mantra, “Life just gets better –only don’t forget to exercise.” Evelyn’s final home was with her daughter and son-in-law Ben Rhodd in Hill City, where she died peacefully.

Grateful for having shared her life are daughter Juanita, 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, with 1 on the way; and Milton's sons Gale (Avis) Anderson and Dwayne (Mary) Anderson. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

A memorial will be held in June 2017, when her remains will be interred with her beloved Milton at Singsaas Cemetery, Hendricks, MN. Cards may be sent to Juanita Rhodd, P.O. Box 846, Hill City, SD 57745.
