Obituary
Unidentified Newsclipping - 1893
ABBOTT.--Leonard Abbott was born near Glassboro, Gloucester County, New Jersey, November 3, 1813, and died at his home February 14, 1893. Converted in early life in Ebenezer Church, Philadelphia, he was a consistent Christian up to the time of his death. For several years he filled various offices in the church, and was loved and respected by all; was a liberal giver to the benevolent interests of the church; quiet and unobtrusive in manner, yet his piety was deep and fervent. He was a devout hearer of the word, and always present at the morning service when circumstances permitted. After his death the following lines were found, which had been written by him some time previously: "I used to fear death and dread the thought of dying, but the nearer I come to death the more it seems to me but just going home to the Saviour whom I have loved so long. The thought of dying is no longer unpleasant to me, but rather comforting; and what was once seemed to be a dark valley is now light from heaven. There is no shadow on my path; I see the glorious light beyond." His end was sudden, but he was ready when the bridegroom came. He leaves a widow and two sons, who are comforted in their sorrow by the hope that they shall meet again.
