Milburn's headstone and his Return of Death both report that he was born in 1836. However in the earliest known record - the November 1850 Marion Township, Crawford County, Arkansas census (which became Sebastian County in 1851) his parents reported him as 5 years old (about 1845) with a birthplace of Arkansas. In that census, older sister Mary was born about 1844 and younger brother Byrum about 1847.

1850 Marion Township, Crawford (Sebastian) County , Arkansas census:
David Beatie 33. Elizabeth Beatie 28. Mary Beatie 6. Milburn Beatie 5, AR. Byrum Beatie. 3 Jesse Beatie 0. Caroline Cardwell 17 (a Samuel Caldwell and family lived nearby). Also, the following are Milburn's maternal grandparents/uncles and were in the same dwelling: Jessee Ross 53. Mary Ross 50. John Ross 14. Milborne Ross 6.

In the 1860 Vineyard Township, Washington County, Arkansas census, his parents reported him as 14 years old (about 1846).
1860 Vineyard, Washington, Arkansas census:
David Beaty 36. Elizabeth Beaty 35. Mary Beaty. Milburn Beaty 14, AR. Bynum Beaty 13. Josie Beaty 10. Jasper Beaty 7. Emily Beaty 6. Margarette Beaty 4. Jane Beaty 1.

In the 1870 Hickman Township, Scott, Arkansas (south of Winfield on Ross Creek) census, he reported himself as being born in Arkansas about 1844.

Milburn's maternal grandfather, Jesse Ross, is reported to have lived on Massard Plain (Marion Township), Sebastian County, Arkansas about 1843. (See footnote 1.)
Milburn's father, David W. Beatty, purchased land in Marion Township, Crawford County (became Sebastian County in 1851), Arkansas on 10 Jul 1848. (See footnote 2.) This land is just NW of current day Rye Hill. Milburn is reported as being born in Arkansas in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census. It is highly likely that Milburn was born in Marion Township, Crawford (Sebastian) County, Arkansas.

Milburn married Mary E. Love on 1 Oct 1865 in Fannin County, Texas. He later married Mary Susan 'Babe' Brown back in Scott County, Arkansas in 1867. (Milburn's father, David W., had a mill on Ross Creek at this time. The remains of that mill can still be seen as of 2023. )

Milburn had 3 children with his second wife, Mary Susan 'Babe' Brown. They are by themselves in the 1880 Hickman Township, Scott, Arkansas census. Milburn's great grandaughter and my mother, Ruth Delola Beaty Epperson (1920-2008) told me that he was a peddler, left about 1875, and was never heard from again. Ruth died knowing only that.

Thanks to DNA, we now know the rest of his story.

Milburn had a son, Thomas Milburn Beatty, with Texana Ward. Thomas was born 5 FEB 1877 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. Three years later, Milburn and Thomas are in Colorado with Maggie Davis as Milburn's 4th wife/partner and Thomas' step-mother.

Milburn's father, David W. Beatty, has sometimes been reported to have the middle name of William. This may or may not be true as no documents or sources with anything other than the middle initial of "W" have thus far been found.

Milburn's mother, Elizabeth Ross, has sometimes been reported to have had a middle name of Sarah. This is an error. There are no known records for Elizabeth also having the name Sarah.

In addition, Elizabeth had a sister named Sarah Ann Ross Bunch who married Hiram Bunch.

(Milburn is my 2d great grandfather. I descend through his son William Thomas 'Bud' Beaty and currently have 7 DNA matches to the descendants of Sarah Beaty Bunch. A descendant of Milburn's through his son, Franklin Kaiser Beaty has 6 DNA matches to the descendants of Sarah Beaty Bunch).

I have seen at least 6 different spellings of Beaty. Milburn's descendants in Scott County have always spelled the name as Beaty - one T - and pronouced it BE'tee.
