Gertrude “Trudy” Fowler, 74, of Concrete, Wash., a long-time Tiffin resident, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Wash.

She was born in Louisville, Ky., March 24, 1926, to George and Anna (Norvell) Hammelman.

Her parents died when she was a small child and she was placed in the Jr. Order of American Mechanics Fraternity Orphanage at age 8. She resided there until she was 18, at which time she moved to Riverside, Calif. She married Paul Austin who also lived at the orphanage and he died in the 1970s. She then lived in North Carolina and Ohio and eventually moved to Washington in 1979.

On Aug. 23, 1993, she married Richard Goulas “Dick” Fowler. They moved to Concrete, Wash. in July 2000.

She is survived by her husband, Dick; a son, David Austin; a stepson, Jerry McMillan; a daughter, Donna Dyer; a stepdaughter, Judy Garner; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, George; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial gathering was held at the home of Jerry and Peggy McMillan on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000.
