U. S. Army Captain, retired 1898. Appointed to the United States military academy at West Point on Sept. 1, 1864, graduating June 15, 1868. Assigned to the 26th Infantry as a Second Lt. in July 1869. Received commission as 1st Lt. of artillery in Nov. 1877 and served in that capacity at several stations in the west and in the department of the lakes. Retired as captain of artillery due to disability incurred in the line of duty. He had an honorable record of 34 years of service in the U. S. Army. After retirement, he moved to Springfield and from 1905 to 1907 served as recruiting officer of the Springfield district. He was never married. Survived by sisters Mrs. Cornelia Bowen, with whom he resided, and Mrs. Frank Cadwallader. His brother Nathaniel, who was also an army officer, died last December.
