Obituary from Lucille's memory page on familysearch.org:
Our beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend passed away of causes incident to age on Monday September 7th in Salt Lake City at the age of 91.
Lucille Hatch Nielson was born February 24, 1924 in Cornish, Utah to Robert Oral (R.O.) and Myrtle Welch Hatch. While growing up, her family lived in Ogden, Utah and Burley, Idaho.
Lucille graduated from Burley High School in 1942. She then attended Utah State University graduating in 1946 with a major in English and minors in Spanish and Counseling. She also served as Student Body Secretary at Utah State.
She married Norman Haight Nielson, also from Burley, in the LDS Salt Lake Temple on August 26th, 1946. Lucille taught school while Norman finished law school. Upon his graduation in 1948, they returned to Burley, Idaho to live and raise their family.
Lucille and Norman raised 4 children, Susan, Norm, Brent and Dave. During their growing up years, Lucille was frequently approached by the school board of the Cassia County School District, who told her it was her civic duty to teach at Burley High School, as they had a shortage of teachers. She taught on-and-off until 1964 when she was asked to use her Counseling minor and be a Counselor at Burley High School. She fell in love with counseling and was accepted into a Master's degree program at Idaho State University. While counseling full-time and caring for her family, she drove 70 miles one way many months after school to Pocatello, Idaho to finish her degree, earning her Master's in Counseling in 1969.
Lucille was known for her ability to write plays, skits and roadshows, which she did for many years. She had a delightful sense of humor, which was enjoyed by all who knew her. She also served in the community as President of the Library Board. She was active in the LDS Church and served faithfully in church callings throughout her life.
In 1978, when Lucille was just 54 years old, her husband, Norman, died of pancreatic cancer. She remained a widow for 37 years. After retiring, she served a full-time mission at the Family History Mission in Salt Lake City, which she enjoyed very much. She also served as an ordinance worker in the Boise, Idaho Temple driving 134 miles one way by herself to serve.
In addition to Burley, Idaho, she lived in Twin Falls, Idaho from 1983 to 2009, and in Holladay, Utah from 2009 until her death. Special thanks goes to her son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Jaci, for having her live with them for 5½ years. The last 7 months of Lucille's life were spent at Beehive Homes in Millcreek. The family wants to thank the staff of Beehive Homes for the loving care they gave to Lucille during her time there.
Lucille made all of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends feel loved and very special. They all looked forward to being with Grandma Lucy.
Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, Norman, her parents, R.O. and Myrtle Hatch, her brothers, Robert and Wesley, and her sister, Marjorie. She is survived by her children, Susan Swann, Norm (Karla) Nielson, Brent (Marcia) Nielson, Dave (Jaci) Nielson, 16 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 4 additional great-grandchildren that will arrive soon.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 11, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Holladay 10th Ward, 4601 S Chapel Drive, Holladay, Utah 84117. A viewing will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the church prior to the funeral. Interment will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Burley, Idaho, at 4:00 p.m. September 11, 2015.
