Leo Valton Upchurch, 78, of 1909 Lyon Road, Fayetteville, died Friday in Highsmith-Rainey Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Upchurch was a first lieutenant in the Air Force and a veteran of World War II. He worked for the civil service on Fort Bragg for 32 years before retiring in 1973. He also worked for D.K. Taylor Oil Co. for 13 years. Mr. Upchurch was a member of Vaughn Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as treasurer for several years.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home chapel by the Revs. Earl Vaughn, John Hedgepeth and Fred Corun. Burial will be in Lafayette Memorial Park.

Mr. Upchurch is survived by his wife, Nellie Upchurch of the home; two sons, Michael Upchurch of Raleigh and Edward Upchurch of Yorktown, Va.; two stepsons, James Smith of Fayetteville and Danny Smith of Indianapolis; a stepdaughter, Debbie Pons of Vass; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
