Vivian Parks Adair, age 89, died Wednesday, August 2, 2006. She was born in Adair, near Clinton, South Carolina, to Varius Parks Adair and Rachel Leake Adair. She had been a resident of Hampton, Virginia, since 1943.

Vivian graduated in 1937 from Brenau College in Georgia, majoring in mathematics and French. She taught school for six years in South Carolina and in Georgia before she took the Civil Service Exam. Having joined NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) in 1943, she worked as a mathematician as the name changed to NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in 1958. She was one of the many female "Computers" who worked at Langley, a story that is featured in the book & film "Hidden Figures." She retired from NASA in 1973.

She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Hampton, Virginia, the First United Methodist Church choir, United Methodist Women, and she was a Certified Lay Speaker. She participated in many clubs, including the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) Chapter AJ, the Hampton Women’s Club, the Penguins Travel Club, the Hampton Senior Citizen’s Club, and the Delta Zeta Sorority. Her hobbies included travel, photography, woodworking, and music.

Vivian Adair is survived by her cousin, Mrs. Richardine Firth, numerous other cousins, nieces, and nephews, and a wide circle of friends.

A memorial service will be conducted Sunday, August 13, 2006, at 2 pm at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Clinton, South Carolina.
