His death Registration gives his place of birth as Iowa and a date of September 1st, 1859, the informant being his youngest daughter, Mrs. Vaughn L. Partridge (Alice Evelyn ) of Coffeyville, Kansas.
The only source giving his birthplace as New York, Possibly Cattaraugus Co., is a Family History written in 1910 but not by a direct member of his family which records, on Page 141, only that he "... came from Olean, New York, with his parents when a small boy, and settled on a farm in Hamilton Co., Iowa ..." on pg. 97 of the same manuscript his birth is recorded as September 1st, 1860.
The earliest Census record he is found on is the 1860 US Census enumerated on July 7th at Burr Oak, Winneshiek Co., Iowa where he is recorded as 1 year old and he, and his older brother Horace, aged 4, are both recorded as born at Iowa and his brother Alpheus, aged 6, and the rest of the older children are recorded as born, like their parents, at New York which suggests his family removed from New York to Iowa about 1865.
The most specific records for his birth location are his 1882 Marriage Registration to Lydia Ann Shelton where his birthplace is recorded as abt 1859 at Winneshiek Co. Iowa and his 1885 Iowa State Census records his birth about 1860, again at Winneshiek Co. Iowa.
