He had routine surgery on August 22, 1985 to correct a dislocated shoulder but later he had developed a 107 degree fever due to a rare and severe case of toxic shock syndrome. After a very close brush with death and after a hard fight he survived and returned to wrestling, but was emotionally and physically exhausted. On April 11, 1987 he was arrested on drunk driving and possessing illegal substances charges. After being released from jail he disappeared and on April 16, 1987, his body was found in a sleeping bag in Lake Lewisville. He committed suicide by lethal overdoses of tranquilizers.
