Rev. Msgr. Lawrence J. Gibson, 87, entered into eternal life on December 3, 2016, after a brief illness.
Monsignor was born on November 21, 1929, in Glendale, California, the son of Hugh and Eva Gibson. After attending Holy Family and Incarnation elementary schools, he pursued a twelve year course of study at Los Angeles College Junior Seminary and St. John's Major Seminary, culminating in his ordination to the priesthood on April 27, 1955.
Throughout his sixty-one years of ordained ministry, Monsignor was, first and foremost, a parish priest. "Father Larry" loved his parishioners, and his parishioners loved him! His assignments included St. Andrew (Pasadena), St. Francis Cabrini (South Los Angeles), St. Basil (Wilshire Center), Sacred Heart (Covina), St. Bernadette (Baldwin Hills), St. Ambrose (West Hollywood), St. Patrick (North Hollywood), Good Shepherd (Beverly Hills), and St. Thomas Aquinas (Monterey Park).
In 1972, he became the founding director of St. Bernadine Chapel, which occupied a unique storefront space in the underground shopping complex at ARCO Plaza in downtown Los Angeles. He was appointed pastor of Ss. Felicitas and Perpetua Church in San Marino in 1974, guiding that parish for the next twenty-nine years. Upon retirement in 2003, he relocated to Laguna Woods Village, where he enjoyed the company of fellow retired seminary classmates while ministering on a part-time basis at local parishes including St. Kilian (Mission Viejo), St. Nicholas (Laguna Woods), and Santiago de Compostela (Lake Forest), and serving as a chaplain at Orange County juvenile detention facilities. Concurrently with his work in local parishes, Monsignor served the larger Archdiocese in a variety of capacities, including Director of Vocations (from 1961 through 1974), Secretary to Cardinal McIntyre, Executive Director of the Liturgical Commission, and Vice-Principal of Bishop Amat High School (La Puente).
Among Monsignor's most treasured memories were his participation in the opening session of the Second Vatican Council in 1962, and his personal meetings with three popes: St. John XXIII, Bl. Paul VI, and St. John Paul II. He was honored as a Papal Chamberlain in 1966, and as a Prelate of Honor in 1988.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 10, at 10:00 a.m. at Ss. Felicitas & Perpetua Church, San Marino, and will be followed by a reception in the parish hall. Private interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Los Angeles.
Throughout his long and varied ministry, Monsignor highly valued the strong fraternal bonds he shared with his brother priests, and cherished his warm friendship with the Carmelite Sisters.
