Ezra McLain
lives on Talcott street and sells strawberries, which he raises in his garden. He came down street with a hand cart load of strawberries and started home with a load of intoxicants. Some of the boys guyed him on the street and while quarreling with them, he made the side-walk a rather unsafe place for ladies, as his cart wobbled fearfully. An officer requested him to take the cart off the walk. His response was prompt, if not satisfactory, for he struck the officer a blow on the side of the jaw, about two inches from where he had stopped Casey's foot. The officer did not remember the biblical advice to turn the other cheek, when one is smitten, but he instead turned McLain into a justice's presence, so rapidly that he hardly know how he got there. The charge Was assaulting an officer, and Mr. McLain is having a hearing before Justice Glezen to-day.
