Thomas Law was the son of Edmund Law, Bishop of Carlisle. His career began in India as a policy maker, there were 3 children from a marriage there, and in 1794 he immigrated to Washington DC from England where he was an investor in many land developments He married Elizabeth Parke Custis, constructing and living in the Thomas Law House which still stands and is on the National Register in Washington DC. They divorced 18 January 1811, one daughter Elizabeth Law (1797-1822) who married Lloyd Rogers of Baltimore.
Thomas Law was buried in an unmarked grave in Rock Creek Cemetery in 1834.
