Birth date is estimated from census data. It's likely that he was the "Saml Achison, age 19" enumerated in Londonderry Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, in 1860. Samuel was a Corporal, promoted to Sergeant in Company I of the 79th Pennsylvania Infantry, which comprised primarily recruits from Lancaster County. He appears on the Callaway County, Missouri, 1890 enumeration of surviving veterans. His widow, Magdalene "Mattie" Shenk Acison, applied for his pension in Feb 1898. She was also listed as a widow on the 1900 and subsequent censuses. The online transcription of her 1932 obituary states that her husband survived her, but that seems to be an error, perhaps confusing him with their son, Samuel. Although it's likely that Mattie would have been buried next to her husband, no marker for Samuel has been identified. Samuel and Mattie had at least 12 children: Mary, Daniel, Uriah, David, Elizabeth, Amanda, William, Vina, Sarah, Samuel, Ada, and Levi.
