Mrs. Leona B. Strickland

Mrs. Leona B. Strickland, 80, of 106 Anthony Street in Baxley passed away Thursday, June 3rd, at her home after an extended illness. She was a native of Waresboro, but had lived in Waycross and Lake City, Fla. Before moving to Baxley 53 years ago. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Baxley. She and her husband, the late Fred S. Strickland, were the founders of Strickland Funeral Home in Baxley. Mrs. Strickland was a charter member of the Baxley Chapter No. 363 Order of the Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron seven times, secretary and pianist many years and two years as District Grand Deputy.
She was past president of the Baxley Woman’s Business and Professional Woman’s Club, a member of the Colonel Daniel Appling Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a former member of the Pine Forest Garden Club, and had served as chairman of the Christmas Seals T.B. Program in Appling County for over 25 years.
Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Barbara Ann Davis of Huntington Beach, Calif.; one son, Freddie S. Strickland of Baxley; two sisters, Mrs. Loretta B. Bennett and Mrs. Euna Lee Shell, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren, Ben and Terri Davis, and Ellen and Fred Strickland IV.
Funeral services were conducted at the chapel of Strickland Funeral Home in Baxley at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 5. The Rev. George McCall, the Rev. Roy Jacobs, and the Rev. Dorris Black officiated. Musical selections were rendered by J.D. Pritchard Sr., accompanied by Mrs. Claire Tanner on the organ. Interment followed in Omega Cemetery near Baxley.
Active pallbearers were Jimmy Mullis, Billy Head, Robert Hudgins, Tommy Barnes, Tom Martin and Wally Moody.
Strickland Funeral Home of Baxley was in charge.
