Austin Hamilton Welch was the oldest son of William Welch Jr. and Elizabeth Raper Welch. He was born on January 4, 1833 in Guilford County, North Carolina. He grew up on his family farm, but very little is known about his early life. In 1850s, Austin's father became the founder of High Point, North Carolina and built the very first store there. It was on December 19, 1854 that Austin was appointed the very first postmaster of High Point, and the post office was located in the very same building that housed his father's store. It was around 1860 that Austin moved from High Point to Charlotte, North Carolina. There, he worked as a bookkeeper for a hardware firm known as Kyle & Hammond, which later became Hammond & Justice. Austin returned to High Point to visit his family frequently, but he continued to live in Charlotte until his death on November 22, 1898.
