Mary Ann Womack was the second child and the only daughter of William and Mary "Polly" Ann Womack. She was born on December 10, 1796 most likely in Hancock County, Georgia. She was only six years old when her father died in May, 1803 in Hancock County Georgia. According to Hancock County court records on September 18, 1804, her grandfather Abraham Womack was named as guardian of all of William's children and their possessions. The guardian arrangement stated that "Polly", Nathaniel, her older brother, and Degrechen, her youngest brother would stay with Polly Ann their mother, Mark Sanders, the oldest son and Abraham Minter would live with their grandfather. Abraham would be responsible for the education and support for the children with him and Polly Ann would be responsible for those with her.
On June 22 1815 at the age of 18, Mary Ann, married widower John G. Pratt in Baldwin County, Georgia. At the time of their marriage, John Pratt was 40 years old and Mary Ann was 20.. His first wife, Sarah Cole Pratt, had died the previous year. John had just been discharged from the War of 1812 in March 1815. They lived in Clinton, Jones County, where John had moved from Wilkes County, Georgia around around 1807 when Jones County was first established from Baldwin County.
When they first married, Mary Ann was probably very busy as she became the stepmother of John's five children by Sarah Cole, who were ages 5 through 10 at the time of their marriage. On December 6, 1816, she had Eleazor, her first born boy, and the first of eleven children by John Pratt. She had their second child Mariah L. on November 26, 1818.
According to the Jones County, Georgia court records, on December 18, 1818, Mary Ann's brother, Abraham Minter Womack, chose to have John Pratt his guardian instead of his grandfather, Abraham Womack. Evidently the way the court order was worded, after age 14, he could be involved in that choice.
On December 26, 1820 Susan Elizabeth was born. On November 22, 1822, they were blessed with twin daughters who were named Sarah Ann and Mary Ann. Thomas Minter, their last child born in Jones County, was born on April 23, 1826.
John and Mary Ann moved their family to Talbot County sometime around 1827 about the time the county was formed.
On June 16, 1829, Mary and John had their sixth child, Abraham Hamilton. On March 29, 1831 Henry Lucas, their seventh child was born. It was through the records of Henry Lucas Pratt that the names and dates of births of the children survived. Casandra Elizabeth was born on November 29, 1834, and Nancy Jane was born December 6, 1837. Charles Mark born in 1840. Charles, their last born and eleventh child died at the age of 3 in 1843.
On November 20,1839 their eldest child and son, Eleazor married Mary R. Brown in Lafayette Co., Georgia. On January 24, 1842, Mariah L., their eldest daughter, married Young H.M. King in Talbot County, Georgia. On September 23, 1843, their daughter Sarah Ann married Moses C. Harris in Talbot County.
They moved to Chickasaw County, Mississippi near Holenlinden around 1843. They lived very close to the border of Chickasaw and Choctaw County. This area is now in Webster Co., Mississippi.
On April 25, 1845, John Pratt died in Chickasaw County, Mississippi. Probably in that same year, daughter Susan Elizabeth married James Allen Jennings, son of Boswell Smith Jennings and Nancy Crowley Jennings.
Also in October 1845, Mary Ann was one of those who went into the constitution of the Double Springs Baptist Church as listed in the minutes. Also named in the constitution was her sister in law Nancy F. Womack, wife of Mark Sanders Womack.
In 1850 Mary Ann was in the US census in Choctaw Co., Mississippi with son Hamilton, aged 20, listed as head of household. They had 300 acres and were listed on the slave census as having 14 slaves. Daughters Mary Ann, Cassey ( Casandra Elizabeth), and Jane (Nancy Jane) were also still living at home. Daughter Susan Elizabeth was living nearby with her husband James Jennings, and grandchildren, John Franklin , and twins Sarah Elizabeth Frances and Myrah Ann Jennings. Mary Ann's brother, Mark Sanders Womack was also living close by.
On April 18, 1851, their son Eleazor was killed by either Indians or robbers in Grimes Co., Texas.
In about 1855, daughter Nancy Jane married Joseph Alexander Hale probably in Choctaw Co., Mississippi
Son, Henry Lucius Pratt, married Mary Catherin Griffin in about 1858.
In the 1860 Census, Mary Ann Pratt was living on 640 acres in Chickasaw Co., Mississippi (Mary Ann was not moving, the county names and boundries moved.) . According to the slave census she had 22 slaves, and one mulatto giving a total of 23 slaves. Her son Henry Pratt was listed as having one slave. Mark Sanders Womack , her brother, was as having 4 slaves. In the 1860 census, Henry, Henry's wife, Mary, and their daughter Emma were living with Mary Womack Pratt.
In the Deed Record Book of Webster County, Mississippi, located in the courthouse at Walthall, Book 4, Page 176, it is duly recorded that Mary Ann (Womack) Pratt on September 26, 1878, transferred to Henry L(ucius) Pratt, her son, for a sum of $1000 a tract of land in Sumner County (now Webster County), Mississippi. The exact location of this 320-acre plot is the East Half of Section 34, Township 15, Range 1 East. From the Tax Assessors Office, it was determined that this land lay just west of the village of Hohenlinden (named for a Napoleonic battle), at the extreme northeastern corner of Webster County, bordering on the extreme southwestern corner of Chickasaw County.
In July 1879 she applied for a widow's pension for John's service in the War of 1812 in Sumner County, Mississippi. The facts stated in the pension application helped trace their movements.
Mary Ann Womack Pratt died on 16 June 1887. She was probably living with Henry Lucius Pratt, her son at the time of her death.
