DUANE EDWARD ASHLEY, 80, of Peniel, WV, passed away on November 23, 2016. He was born September 30, 1936 in Peniel, the son of the late Herbert Ashley and Orpha Atkinson Ashley.
He graduated from Spencer High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy where he was stationed at the Newport News Naval Station in Rhode Island, and aboard the U.S.S. Suribachi, an ammunition ship which participated in many NATO exercises during the Cold War. After his honorable discharge from the navy he worked for many years as a Supervisor in the Kaiser Aluminum plant in Ravenswood, WV.
Duane was a true Mountaineer, and who among us can forget the memories of him around Spencer wearing his WVU cap, or seated on his favorite couch, remote-control in hand, cheering for the blue and gold as they did battle on the football field or basketball court. His other pastimes included golf and gardening.
He is survived by daughters, Karen Ashley Debenport of Dallas, TX, and Vickie Ashley Bagnall of Carrollton, TX; son Eddie Ashley of Horse Shoe, NC; sisters Helen Board of Salisbury, NC; Imogene Wolfe of Dunbar, WV; Lois Carpenter of Seville, OH; brother Robert Ashley of Millwood, WV. Duane was also the patriarch to seven grand-children and eight great-grandchildren.
As Duane struggled with his health in later years he was well-cared for by the professionals at the Ravenswood Care Center. His dear brother Bob was constantly by his side, caring for him with attention, devotion and compassion; and showing the greatest measure of sibling love for his elder brother. Duane was loved by his family, admired, and respected by everyone; and he awaits us all above.
Duane will be interred at 11:00am Tuesday, November 29th after a graveside service at the Eventide Cemetery in Spencer. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Hospice Care 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston, WV 25387. Tel: 304-768-8523. TAYLOR-VANDALE FUNERAL HOME, 206 Beauty Street Spencer WV 25276 is in charge of arrangements for the Ashley family.
