The son of Jacob Henry & Mary (Steitzel) Asper, he was from Huntington Township, Adams County, although his whereabouts in 1860 are unknown.
A Civil War veteran, he mustered into federal service March 6, 1865, as a private with Co. K, 40th New Jersey Infantry, promoted to sergeant March 7, 1865, reduced to corporal three days later, and honorably discharged with his company July 13, 1865.
He married Barbara A. Huntsberger and fathered Anna M. (b. 1867), Mary E. (b. 1869), Salome (b. 1872), and Grace (b. 1874 - married Charles D. McCoy). He died accidentally at age 43-8-14 from the effects of a fractured skull and likely also internal injuries when a log struck him on the head and he fell twenty feet to the barn floor.
