John Wagner was a partner with Cyrus Wheeler Hewitt of Hewitt & Co. and eventually married Cyrus Hewitt's sister, Mary, in 1862. After amassing considerable wealth in mining and the coach lines, he purchased property in Malvern, Victoria, and commissioned architect Charles D'Ebro to design and build an Italianate Victorian-style 40-room mansion, later named Stonington, for Mary.
Mary had four siblings: John Harrison (1863-1904), a journalist, lawyer and playwright; Charlotte Emma (Avery) (1868-1954); Hannah Elizabeth (1859-1905), who married Samuel McCulloch, a lawyer; and George Prescott (b. 1878).
Mary Josephine married Major Arthur William Hammans (1846-1916) on Oct. 23, 1889.
Hammans was a major in the British Army's Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. He served in Burma in 1892-1893 and was a recruiting officer during World War I. He became ill due to stress during the war and died. He was listed as a war casualty.
Mary and Arthur had two sons: Arthur John Spencer Hammans (1891–1917) and Alexander William Hammans (1894–1937). The older brother was a captain in the same regiment as his father. He earned the Military Cross for gallantry and coolness under fire during battle, served in France and Flanders, and covered the retreat from Mons while a scouting officer. He was killed in 1917 when an enemy mortar shell exploded in the trenches where his regiment was under heavy artillery attack.
The younger son, Alexander, was a lieutenant in the British Army and a training officer. He lost his right hand and badly injured his legs when a hand grenade exploded in the trenches in France in 1915.
