Elena Constantinovna Dourneff was the daughter of Constantine Afanasievitch Dourneff, a Russian émigré who settled in Japan with his family after escaping the Russian Revolution. She received an excellent education and was fluent in Russian, English, French, and Japanese. Her family left Japan and eventually settled in San Francisco where she was actively involved in the social and cultural life of the Russian émigré community. There she met Prince Andrew Andreivich Romanov, a grandson of Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna of Russia. They were married in 1951 in San Francisco, but were to later divorce. She married Odom W. Modling, as her second husband, in 1968.
