William was born in Minnesota, a son of Andrew Bakken and Abigail (Abbie) L. Bucklin.

His father died the year he was born, and he and his mother lived with her mother and step-father, James W. and Charlottie Browning, and their family in Harris, Minnesota.

By 1920 he and his mother lived with her sister, Myrtle Coyne, in Brainard,. He was working for the Northern Pacific railroad as a pipefitter. By 1930 he and his mother were in Minneapolis and he was a butcher.

He married Lucille Marie Butler in 1937. They apparently did not have children.

By 1940 he was working for M. F. Prentice as a butcher in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. His mother and her sister Myrtle were living with him.

In 1951 he was the manager of the meat department at the Red Owl store in Robbinsdale. In 1959 he and Lucille were in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, where he was in the retail meat business for many years.

He was a member of the Compass Masonic Lodge in Robbinsdale.

They retired to Sun City, Arizona in 1963.

William was survived by his wife, Lucile.
