William was living in Connellsville, Fayette Co., PA in the 1860 US census. He enlisted in the First Pittsburgh (PA) Rifles on 1 May 1861. Muster into Co A, Ninth Pennsylvania Reserve Corps on 26 June 1861 Mustered in Federal Service on 28 July 1861 as Co. A, 38th PA Volunteer Infantry. William was listed as MIA on 30 June 1862 at Frazier's Farm (aka Glendale) during the Seven Day Battles before Richmond. Listed as died in hospital on the Monument in Conneaut Lake, PA. (Place of death and burial not stated.)
