Mary Joan Akstinas, age 74 a longtime resident of Torrance, passed away on Friday, November 11, 2016. She was the first of 6 children born to the late Anthony and Agnes Akstinas in Pittsburgh, PA on December 14, 1941.

Mary attended St. Anthony School and St. Michael's High School, before attending Calif. State University Long Beach where she completed her studies to become a teacher. Mary worked in the LA Unified School District at the Woodcrest Elementary School where she taught Kindergarten until her retirement in 2007. She was a longtime member of St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church in Torrance where she volunteered for many years.

Family and friends were Mary's passion and devotion. She gave tirelessly to others, providing care to family members in need as well as her many causes devoted to animals. She loved searching used bookstores for classic mystery novels and DVD's of British crime series.

Mary is survived by her brothers, Michael and Mark Akstinas. She also leaves behind numerous loving relatives and friends.
The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her during her last few weeks.

Services will be held at St. Catherine Laboure Church in Torrance, CA on Thursday, November 17. A rosary will be held at 10:30 am followed by the funeral mass at 11:00 am. Burial will be held at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach at 12:30pm followed by a reception at the cemetery.
