Ex-Sen. Sherman Dies At Age Of 76.
Came to Utah on Completion of U.P.; Member of Utah Commission
"Following a short illness, Hoyt Sherman, 76, former state senator and an early Utah railroad man, died at the Fifth East hotel Tuesday night.
Mr. Sherman came to Utah when the Union Pacific railroad was completed. He served as received of the United States land office in Utah under the appointment of President Benjamin Harrison. He was later appointed by President Grover Cleveland as a member at the Utah commission. It was during his term of office that elections were held pertaining to the state constitution the selection of constitutional delegates and other requirements leading to statehood.
Mr. Sherman was born in Des Moines, Ia., April 18, 1851. On finishing high school in 1869 he turned his attention to railroading. He married Hattie M. Warner in Des Moines in 1874. He was the son of James and Sophia Connell Sherman.
Since the death of his wife several years ago, Mr. Sherman had been living at the Fifth East Hotel.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. George Jay Gibson of Salt Lake and Mrs. Prentis N. Gray of Larchment N.Y., and one son."
