Kenneth McDonald: Elkhart jail inmate dies at hospital
GOSHEN -- An Elkhart County Jail inmate died Tuesday at Goshen General Hospital.

Kenneth McDonald, 57, of Goshen, was pronounced dead about 5 p.m. Tuesday, said Trevor Wendzonka, spokesman for the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department.

McDonald was taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after inmates alerted officers he was having trouble breathing, Wendzonka said.

He was alert and responsive when he was taken to the hospital, Wendzonka added. There was no apparent sign of trauma.

Preliminary autopsy results indicate McDonald died from heart and lung complications from past medical injuries.

"There was no foul play or injuries," Elkhart County Coroner Jeff Landrum said of McDonald's death. "He died a natural death. ... The cause of death was blood clots to the lung."

McDonald's wife Sue McDonald said she was notified of her husband's death by a phone call.

"I was shocked," she said Wednesday afternoon. "He has several things going on (healthwise), none of which should have caused death."

McDonald had been in jail since Nov. 13 on charges of domestic battery and criminal deviate conduct, both Class B felonies. His case was pending at the time of his death.

McDonald's death marks the second death of an Elkhart County Jail inmate since 2004.

In December 2004, 22-year-old Nicholas Rice, of Goshen, was found unconscious in his cell by a correctional officer. An autopsy revealed he died of natural causes.

McDonald's death marks the third inmate death in the area since November. Greg Cornell, 27, of Osceola, died after jumping from a second-story tier inside St. Joseph County Jail in November. His death was ruled a suicide.

Cassandra Spencer, 47, of South Bend, died in December after collapsing inside her cell at St. Joseph County Jail.
