Abraham Yates McFarlin was born in the state of New York near Syracuse, July 8th, 1828, in which state he grew to young manhood. At the age of twenty-three he moved with his parents to Clinton County, Iowa, settling near what is now the town of Bryant. Here they experienced many of the hardships of pioneer life. He was united in marriage to Lota A. Bingham, who survives him, Jun. 7, 1856. To them were born 7 children, 2 dying in infancy, and one son Alpheus dying in 1880 at the age of 24. The four surviving children are Mrs. F. J. Hughes of Dana, Iowa, O. E. McFarlin of Dexter, Iowa, Mrs. J. H. Hughes of Grand Jct., Iowa, and Mrs. F. E. Dickey of Dexter, Iowa. Also eighteen grand children and 1 great grand child. He moved to his present home south of Dexter in 1902, where he died very suddenly, Sept. 10th, 1915, aged 87 years, 2 months and 2 days.

Mr. McFarlin was one of the pioneer settlers in Iowa, and came to be most successful and prosperous as a farmer. He was honorable in his business relations, accommodating and whole-hearted as a neighbor, and most kind and indulgent toward the members of his own household. His death comes as a great bereavement to them.

The funeral was held at the home on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 12, at 1 :00 p.m., in the presence of a large company of sympathizing friends and neighbors, conducted by Rev. W. F. Goff, pastor of the Dexter Presbyterian church. Interment took place in the Dexter cemetery.

Among those from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hughes of Dana, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hughes of Dana, Mrs. Lucy Favargue, Mrs. Robert Hoffman, Mrs. Sarah Maxfield of Union City, Mich., Mrs. Hannah Torry of Kingman, Kansas and Mrs. A. J. Daniel of Boone, Iowa.
