Hans Johnson, Pioneer Area Resident, Dies
Hans J. Johnson, 85, long-time resident of Sioux Falls and vicinity before moving to Sarasota Fla., died Wednesday morning at his home following a long illness. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Born Jan. 1, 1869 in Norway, Mr. Johnson moved to South Dakota with his parents In 1873 and settled near the Norway Church west of Garretson. They were among a 13 family caravan that settled in that area. Mr. Johnson moved to Sioux Falls in 1911 and become associated with the International Harvester Co. He remained with the firm until he retired 18 years ago. He then resided at Blue Earth, Minn., and Shenandoah, la., before moving to Sarasota three years ago. The town of Hartman, S.D., presently nonexistent, was founded by Mr. Johnson and his brother. It was located seven miles north of Hartford. They operated a general store there. The former Emma Siverson and Mr. Johnson were married about 59 years ago. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Lutheran Church. Survivors include the widow; three sons, Sidney and Clifford, both of Sarasota, and Lester N., Mitchell; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three brothers, John, California, Earl, Flint, Mich., and David, Yankton; and one sister, Mrs. Annie Larson, Garretson.
