John Louis Peyton, Sr. was born November 28, 1929 in Hinesville, Liberty County, Georgia, the first of four children of Ishmael William B. Peyton and Lois Netherae Bell Peyton. His first wife was Marie Weed Peyton, and they had four children: Tracie Peyton Powell, Alan Peyton, Lee Peyton Epperson, and Mechelle Peyton Lund. His second wife was Marcelene Powell Peyton, and they were the parents of John Louis Peyton, Jr. He had ten grandchildren at the time of his death. John, Sr. died on May 17, 2013 in Cartersville, Bartow County, Georgia at age 83, and while his obituary indicated he would be buried at Providence Cemetery in Cartersville, the cemetery has no record of his burial. Could he have been cremated?

John, Sr. served his country in the National Guard and later went on to be a Regional Service Technician for International Harvester. He also held an honorary degree from Clemson University. John, Sr. was a true Renaissance man who was known to say “if I can’t fix it, it’s not broken”. John L., better known as "Peyton," was a diehard Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta Braves fan. He will be remembered for his optimism and outstanding attitude in all situations. With him the cup was always half full. Peyton loved his family and was always a great man to talk to.

Thanks to Bell family researchers for much of this information, and thanks to Dirk Whittemore for help in trying to locate Peyton's grave. Any errors, however, are mine alone.
