Born in 1914 to James and Lydia Bryant, she was the youngest of 14 children, having eight brothers and five sisters, all born and raised on the family's tobacco farm in Edgecombe, N.C. She attended Atlantic Christian College (now Barton) and was an avid choral musician. She was a member of Chesapeake Avenue United Methodist Church participating in the Bel Canto Chorus, Howell Bible Class and United Methodist Women. She belonged to the Garden Club and the Winnie Heath Ladies Circle. She worked several years at the Tidewater AAA office.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mayhue Whitehurst. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia and Bill Shelton of Manassas; three grandsons and their wives, Robert Shelton of Strasburg, Va., Jon Shelton, of Manassas and Alan Shelton of Bristow, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Andrew, Alexander and Natalie Shelton; a sister, Ella Cummings, 100, of Luray, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, at Chesapeake Avenue United Methodist Church, 1200 Chesapeake Ave., Chesapeake, VA 23324. Internment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park, Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach. The Rev. Carroll C. Carter will officiate. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Francis Gay Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, Chesapeake.
