Aaron J Jones was one son of James Newell and Nancy Jones. His full middle name may have been James for his father, but is unconfirmed. Born in Carroll County, GA, he moved with his family to Alabama in about 1848 and married Tabhitha C Garner on March 28, 1858, in Tallapoosa County. Tabhitha, "Tilda" per one surviving period letter (transcription attached), was almost certainly related to his brothers-in-law, Elija P Garner and Gasaway Garner, each married to one of his sisters, but the exact relationship between them has not been determined or proven to date.

In 1862 he enlisted with his younger brother, John Washington Jones, and three of his brothers-in-law, including Elija Garner, in Company I, 3rd Regiment, Georgia Calvary. Period family letters have survived written by his brother and brothers-in-law home to their wives and family, one also written by Aaron (plus another note attached to a second letter by one brother-in-law). The letter written on Aug 26, 1862 to Tilda, is surprisingly profound for such a young man from rural Alabama, and notes his impressions from atop Lookout Mountain in Tennessee where he can see "seven states" and remarks on the insignificance of the works of man compared to nature (partial transcription attached).

Aaron and his brother John survived the war, but his three brothers-in-law with whom he served, did not, nor did two other Jones brothers-in-law who served with other units. Twenty of his known nieces and nephews were left fatherless or as orphans, and of those only eleven are found in records after the Civil War. He and Tilda plus their two sons are found in 1870 living with Aaron's parents, James Newell and Nancy, in newly created Clay County, AL, likely the same location where they had lived before the war, but then still Tallapoosa County. Aaron and Tilda would have a total of four known offspring:

James Henry "Jimmy" Jones, abt 1861-unk
John Washington Jones, 1870-1941 – memorial no. 86002798
Nancy Elizabeth "Lizzie" Jones Wheeler(?), 1874-unk
George Wheeler Jones, 1879-1925 - no memorial to date - burial location unknown.

Sometime after the 1880 census, where the entire family is recorded in Coleta, Clay County, AL, Tilda passes, and by 1900 (no 1890 census records survive) he is found noted as a widower living with his youngest sons, John and George, and daughter Lizzie plus others, in Kingsland Town, Cleveland, AR. Lizzie appears to be the widow Wheeler at this time, with a daughter, Cora Lee, but the record is unclear and some aspects possibly or clearly in error. No confirmed records are found for his oldest son, Jimmy, after 1880, and no death or burial records have been found for his daughter Lizzie or his wife Tilda. She may have died in Alabama or Arkansas, and all that can be determined was that her death was after 1880 and before 1900. Her full correct name has been determined to have been Tabhitha C Garner, her first name a variation on the biblical name, but it is incorrectly recorded in all records except one.

An Arkansas death index recorded an Aaron Jones' death in Chicot, AR on Nov 22, 1929, but the original death certificate has now verified that this was not this Aaron Jones, but another of that name.. No confirmed death or burial record has yet been found as is the case with two of his offspring, George's death confirmed, but without burial information. Interestingly, brothers John and George each married two Cason sisters.

All that can now be determined is that Aaron died after 1900, per his last census record, and likely in Arkansas, but unproven. His parents, James Newell and Nancy Jones, had ten known offspring, more likely twelve, and many grandchildren, but their deaths and burials also remain unknown as do most in this Jones lineage.
