CHARLES ELLIS IS DEAD IN LOGGING ACCIDENT

Charles Ellis, well known Elk Creek resident was killed instantly Thursday morning in a logging accident at Big Springs, southwest of Alder Springs in the Mendocino National Forest.
Ellis was struck in the head by a falling oak tree which had been hit by a rolling log.
He had been employed as a choker setter for Robert Manley, logging operator. The fatal accident happened shortly after the logging crew had started work that morning.
Ellis, 50 years of age, was born at Elk Creek and had been engaged in farming in that area for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dora Ellis of Elk Creek; three daughters, Mrs. Maxine Jacobs of Sacramento; Mrs. Hazel Reese of Coos Bay, Oregon, and Carmen Ellis of Elk Creek; two sons, Stanley Ellis, in the U.S. Army and Delbert Ellis; one brother Roy Ellis of Willows, and two sisters, Mrs. Roy Hull of Willows, and Mrs. Rena Parks of Paskenta.

Funeral Services Held for Victim of Logging Accident
Graveside funeral services were held yesterday afternoon in the Chrome cemetery for Charles Ellis, member of a prominent Elk Creek district family, who was killed in a logging accident last Thursday.
Ellis was engaged in setting chokers for the Dover Lumber company in Logan Basin, near Alder Springs. He had attached a cable to a log and was standing nearby when the log rolled away and crashed into a tree, causing a branch about four inches in diameter to break loose and fall on him. Ellis was struck on the head.
Ellis, whose parents were pioneers of the Elk Creek section, was born there 50 years ago, living there all his life. He had farmed in that are for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dora Ellis of Elk Creek; three daughters, Mrs. Maxine Jacobs of Sacramento, Mrs. Hazel Reese of Coos Bay, Ore., and Carmen Ellis of Elk Creek; two sons, Stanley Ellis, in the U.S. army, and Helbert Ellis; one brother, Roy Ellis of Willows, and two sisters, Mrs. Roy Hull of Willows and Mrs. Rena Parks of Paskenta. - Transcribed by M.
