She was born in St. Louis, MO, on October 19, 1942, the first daughter of Robert H. and Olive {Sewall} Charles.
She graduated from Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, CT, and Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY.
After graduation, Ellena worked as a kindergarten teacher in New York City before moving to Cleveland and then to Bath, where she taught for many years.
She was employed at Cole, Layer & Trumble, where she met her future husband, James Riley. In the late 70s, she became a realtor in the Bath area.
Ellena played piano and enjoyed cooking, gardening, needlepoint, the Red Sox, traveling and spending time at home. She loved her two Shih-Tzu dogs and cats. She was a State Life member and past president of the Bath Garden Club.
She is survived by her husband, James Riley of Bath; one brother, Sumner Charles of Ladue, MO; one sister, Eliza Walton and her husband, Bill of Newcastle, ME; her uncle Nick Sewall and his wife, Jeanne.
She was predeceased by two brothers, McCandless "Mac" Charles and Robert H. Charles, Jr.
