Betty Carter Underwood departed this life on November 3, 2016, joining her beloved husband and other family members.

Betty was born on December 18, 1933 in Draper, Utah, the unexpected smaller twin who arrived 10 minutes after her brother. She grew up in Draper in the midst of the depression. Her father supported his family by making egg crates, but the children never knew they were poor. The family moved to Ogden when Betty was young and she grew up there, graduating from Ogden High School and attending Weber State College and then Brigham Young University where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She met Bill Underwood while at Weber State and they married in the Salt Lake Temple in October 1955, while both were attending BYU. Their married life was punctuated by frequent moves first to Indianapolis, IN and then to Dugway Proving grounds with the army then to Richland, Washington with General Electric and then to Albuquerque, Los Angeles, San Jose, Tulsa, San Jose again, and Arlington, Texas with IBM. Along the way Betty taught elementary school (mostly 5th and 2nd grades) and had five children. She started with a set of twins delivered in Ogden when the total cost was $30. By 1960, she had 4 children under age four and was teaching full time. Her 5th child was born in 1970, and she retired from teaching to be a full-time mom. The final work related-move to Arlington, TX was only accomplished after Bill promised Betty that they could live near the Texas Rangers ball field and that they could have a swimming pool! When Bill retired from IBM, they moved to Layton where they lived out their days.

Betty’s passions included quilting, service, baseball, and her family. Quilting was a delight for her and her family. Betty made beautiful quilts for her 5 children and 20 grandchildren and won quilting awards at the Texas and Utah State Fairs. Service was an essential part of her life, to the very end she looked for ways to help others. She served as primary, young women’s and relief society presidents at both the ward and stake levels. She worked at the Dallas and Ogden temples and served missions with Bill in the Manila Philippines and the London UK temples. Betty loved baseball and especially the Texas Rangers. She was a faithful fan whose two favorite baseball phrases were, “Don’t worry, it’s still early in the season” until mid July, and then “There’s always next year” until October. A program from a 1955 Brooklyn Dodger game featuring Jackie Robinson and an autograph from Nolan Ryan are treasured keepsakes. Her family was her greatest delight. She is survived by her sister Norene (Jay) Page, her children Dean (Cheryl) Underwood, Diane (Dard) Larson, Mark (Patty) Underwood, Janice (James) Johnson and Lisa Laughlin, 19 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. She was a beautiful woman, inside and out and will be missed.
