He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, grew up in Brooklyn and moved to Greenridge in 1986. After marrying Marie Helena Hart, the couple settled in Great Kills in 1988.
Walter was a financial comptroller for several businesses, retiring in the early 1990s. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School and attended the University of Mississippi and the College of Staten Island.
Walter owned and managed Belaire Motors BMW in Richmond from 1986 until it closed in the early 1990s.
He enjoyed visiting Atlantic City, traveling and watching movies.
Walter was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army where he earned a Bronze Star, and then served in the U.S. Air Force from 1946 to 1951.
His first wife, the former Virginia Marcella Reynolds, died in 1985. His son, Walter James Colborne Jr., died in 2011.
Walter is survived by his 3 daughters, Virginia Colborne Drancsak, Cathleen Colborne Kmetz and Christine Colborne Becker; 7 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was officiated on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 2 PM in the Matthew Funeral Home, 2508 Victory Boulevard, Mid Island, NY 10314. Arrangements included cremation.
