William's parents were Stephen K. Hampton and Emeline "Emma" Witwer, who married two days after Thanksgiving on 29 Nov 1873 in Marshall Co., Indiana.

William married Lottie Louisa Holm on 28 Jan 1899 in Marshall County. Lottie was the daughter of Moses Holm and Olevia Spitler. I found three children for William and Lottie—Orval Auston (8 Feb 1900), Delmas E. (1907), and Emma Olevia (17 Apr 1914).

The 1900 Census placed the family in Plymouth, Marshall County. William, aged 25, was a day laborer. Lottie, aged 24, reported that she had had a single child. Son Orval appeared with his parents, aged 3 months.

Sadly, in the summer the year following that census, Orval died on 24 Aug 1901, victim of enterocolitis, an inflammation of the digestive tract.

The 1910 Census had the family living on 5th Street in Plymouth. William, aged 34, was working as a carpenter. Lottie, aged 33, reported that she had had two children, but that only one of those children was still alive, a sad reminder of the loss of son Oval nine years earlier. With his parents on that census was son Delmas, aged 2.

On his 12 Sep 1918 WWI registration, William, aged 43, reported that he was living at 1819 Michigan St. in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana, and employed as a carpenter by Henry Millhouse. Wife Lottie was noted as his next of kin. He was noted as being of medium height, slender build, with blue eyes and light hair.

The 1920 Census caught back up with the family, back living in Plymouth. William, aged 43, was still working as a carpenter. Lottie, aged 43, was keeping house. At home with their parents were son Delmas, aged 12, and daughter Emma, 5 years old.

The family was still together in 1930, zoned into Plymouth's Center Township. William, aged 54, was farming. Lottie, aged 54, was home with Delmas, aged 23, and Emma, aged 15.

The year after that census, the family lost wife and mother Lottie on 18 Jun 1931 at age 55. Sadly, she would miss both of her children's weddings. On 5 Sep 1936, Emma married Lester Hughes in the First Methodist Church in Plymouth. Son Delmas also wed that decade, marrying Versa McVey.

William, aged 60, appeared without his helpmate and companion on the 1940 Census, still living in Center Township. With him were son Delmas, aged 32 and working as a truck driver for NIPSCO, and Delmas' wife Versa, aged 34.

Tragedy struck again on 1 Mar 1947 when William's son Delmas was electrocuted while at work. He was only 39 years old. He was laid to rest next to his mother Lottie. Delmas' wife Versa remarried nine months after losing Delmas, exchanging vows with Royse McGuin, the son of Frank and Lumma McGuin. They eventually divorced and I lost track of her after that.

William passed into the light in 1950. Daughter Emma had him laid to rest on Lottie's other side.
