Rev. William Leon “Bill” Benson, 69, died, November 6, 2016, at his home.

A Visitation will be Wednesday, November 9, 2016, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. A Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 PM in the Lowndes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Byron Benson officiating. Interment will be in Vaughn Cemetery, Steens, MS with Lowndes Funeral Home directing.

Rev. Benson, born July 15, 1947, in Gadsden, AL, was the son of W. L. Benson, Sr. and Dot Campbell Benson. After graduating from Gadsden High School, he earned his B. A. in Sociology from Bethel University in McKenzie, TN and completed his seminary study at Memphis Theological Seminary.

After marrying Annette Mims of Columbus, the two had a long bi-vocational ministry together, they served the AL Sheriff’s Girls Ranch for four years before becoming founding staff members of the MS Sheriff’s Boys Ranch in Lowndes County. Ordained into the Cumberland Presbyterian ministry in 1986, he has pastored the Antioch CP Church in Pickens County, AL for thirty years. In addition, he has served as a construction supervisor for Habitat for Humanity and as a home school counselor in the public school system. In addition to his parents, Rev. Benson was preceded in death by his granddaughter-Ally Marie Benson and brothers-in-law-Howell “Gay” Mims and Allen Thornton.

Rev. Benson is survived by his wife-Annette Mims Benson; two sons-Brian (Jennifer) Benson, Greenwood Springs, MS and Byron (Melanie) Benson, Caledonia, MS; three grandchildren-Avery Benson, Claire Benson, and Lily Benson; two sisters-Sharon (Sonny) Brady, Gadsden, AL and Sylvia Thornton, Dothan, AL. “Pop Benson” will also be missed by his many Ranch children. Jason and Jeaneane Gentry of Hernando have especially remained an integral part of the Benson family, along with their children Jase and Abagale.

Pallbearers are Carl Brady, Tommy Brown, Sterling Doolittle, Wes Mims, Robert Pool, and Bob Rutledge. Honorary Pallbearers are Sonny Brady, Andy Carpenter, Ken Dyer, David Hughes, Ben Parrish, Bobby Reese, Wes Thornton, Chris Brannon, Tom Defnall, and John Falls.
