Stephen Fornal, 48, of 323 Emerald St., former employee of Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp., died at 12:55 a.m. Monday in the Oil City Hospital following an extended illness.

Born Dec. 25, 1922, in Oil City, he was a son of the late Andrew and Antonia Fornal.

Mr. Fornal, an Army veteran of World War II, saw action in Ardennes, Central Europe and the Rhineland.

He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.

He was also an outstanding local baseball and softball athlete.

Mr. Fornal was a member of the Polish National Alliance softball team that reached the state finals in Milton. The team played throughout the tri-state area and against the best competition available. He played both second base and shortstop for the team for many years while the team was based at Keystone Grounds.

Mr. Fornal was employed by J & L Steel Corp. until illness forced him to retire.

He was a member of the Polish National Alliance, the Pulaski club and the Church of the Assumption B. V. M.

He was married to the former Dorothy Vidsens who survives.

In addition to his widow he is survived by three sons, Daniel of Oil City and Andrew and Stephen Jr., both at home; one daughter Cheryl at home; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Ayotte of Oil City, Mrs. Catherine Nowakowski of Blawnox, Mrs. Joseph (Ann) Warcholic of Oil City and Mrs. Julian (Helen) Bienko of Oakmont; three brothers, Joseph and Leo, both of Oil City, and Stanley of Ambridge.

Mr. Fornal was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Leonard (Bess) Rumbard, and a brother Frank.

Friends are being received at the Joseph Szabat Funeral Home.

Requiem mass will be sung at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Assumption Church. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
