Needles Desert Star

Marvin Mosely Carter, Sr. passed away Nov. 5, 2015, after battling cancer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Demarious Carter; sister, Dianna Eddy; and Marvin Howze, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Shannon; children, Marvin, Cari (James) Horn and Dustie; grandchildren, Kyle, Matthew, Mason, Dani and Dayne; siblings, Charles, Frank and John Carter; Marvin, Sally and David Howze; inlaws, David and Iris Daniels, Davi, David, Dannette and families.
His first job was at McDaniels Texaco gas station at the age of 16. He worked as a brakeman/conductor for Santa fe Railroad for the next 16 years. During that time he became a Level I and II line reserve for Needles Police Department, then was hired as an officer in 1987. In 1989 Marvin went to work for the San Bernardino County Sheriff Department as a deputy sheriff, DRE and search and rescue member. Marvin was also a part-time EMT with Needles Ambulance from 1990 to 1993. After retiring as a sheriff deputy Marvin went to work for the city of Needles as code enforcement officer and later building inspector. As if all this wasn’t enough he also worked nights for Needles Center for Change as a DUI counselor and for San Bernardino County Sheriff Department as a seasonal boating officer.
Marvin had a drive to challenge himself. He lifted weights and jogged before entering into biathlons, triathlons and natural body building competitions. Marvin ran Fitness and Muscle Gym. He also swam with the Needles Swim Team and competed in senior swim meets out of town.
Marvin’s love of the Colorado River began at age two in a boat with his Grandpapa. He raced runabout boats in the early 1970s and 2000s flat bottom and brackets with NJBA. In his later years he went back to his true love of fishing. He competed in semi-pro bass fishing tournaments for several years with various clubs, the last one being Kingman Bass Club.
Marvin had an extensive legacy that will live on forever. He will be missed by many. Our family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers, cards and calls. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, at 11 a.m. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church), 2001 El Monte Dr., Needles, Calif.
